He lives in a magical animal kingdom in the heart of Beijing. His closest friends are a fashion-conscious Pekinese who eats from chopsticks, a curious cockatoo, a thirsty lizard, a rabbit, a turtle and a mynah bird who, with just a little prompting, tells him to “Have a beer”. He is famous, far beyond Beijing, for the unlikeliest of reasons: for the past 20 years, he has been talking about crickets. He's one of the last masters of the 1,500-year-old Chinese art of cricket fighting. A steady stream of foreign tourists arrive at his house to watch him stage fearsome matches and listen to him regale them with tales of valor and victory. Grateful tour guides congratulate Cricket Liu on another great performance and press pretty red envelopes with wads of cash into his hands. It’s a charmed existence, but the one thing he wants most in life remains forever just beyond his grasp.
